Rhinoplasty is usually done with two main techniques; open nose and closed nose surgery. Generally, this procedure is done under general anesthesia and an overnight stay in the hospital may be recommended.
During the Open Rhinoplasty surgical process, incisions are made in the vertical tissue separating the two nostrils. Nose tissue, bone, and cartilage get separated from the support frame in order for the surgeon to see nose structure thoroughly. This technique is basically used as secondary rhinoplasty or for the surgery known as reconstructive rhinoplasty.
In closed rhinoplasty surgery, all incisions are concealed within the bone.
For this reason, there won’t be any outer scars present.
This technique is also considered as one of the aesthetic techniques.
An appropriate method will be chosen by the surgeon for achieving the desired result regarding the patient’s status.
Postoperative
After rhinoplasty surgery, the occurrence of swelling and bruising is common and natural, as it is in all other surgeries. Ceasing of these side effects may take one or two weeks.
In all cases, swelling only gets down after a couple of months. In some cases, this may take up to a year.
Nose-filling helps the swelling to go down but until the filling is removed, the nose cannot be used for breathing. Nausea may be felt after surgery. In order to cope with the aches after surgery, the surgeon will prescribe some painkillers.
For stopping the bleeding which normally occurs after surgery, it is recommended to use cold bandages.
Avoid applying pressure to the nose after surgery for two to three weeks. Also, avoid salty foods and bathing.
For the first two weeks after the surgery, patients should eat liquid foods that do not require chewing; wear shirts with buttons; sleep with the head resting upwards and have showers instead of baths.
The healing process is indicated the same as primary or reconstructive rhinoplasty.
