Radiation Oncology

The Radiation Oncology Department at ElixirMed Hospitals aims to destroy tumors using ionizing radiation. We work closely with surgical disciplines and medical oncology to determine the best treatment options. Radiotherapy is a part of treatment for approximately 80% of patients with documented cancer.

⭐ Radiotherapy is delivered using high-tech devices and specially molded restraint tools. Radiation sources include high-energy X-rays, gamma rays, neutrons, and protons. Radiotherapy modalities are divided into three types: external radiotherapy, brachytherapy, and radiosurgery.

⭐External Radiotherapy

The patient is placed on a flat treatment table, and radiation beams are targeted at the tumor zone. This method can treat tumors located anywhere in the body. The treatment is painless, with each session lasting approximately 15 minutes per day. The number of sessions is determined by the radiation oncologist. Potential side effects vary depending on the target zone but are generally well tolerated.

⭐Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy involves placing radioactive sources in body spaces or between tissues temporarily. It may be used alone or in combination with external therapy, delivering high doses to a local region while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. This technique is commonly used for cervical and endometrial cancers.

⭐Radiosurgery

Radiosurgery aims to completely destroy a tumor smaller than a certain size by delivering very high doses of radiation in one or more sessions. Various devices are used for this purpose, and the suitability of the patient for this treatment is determined by the doctor.
